Striking it lucky with life in the fast lane at Jardines

This week we are stepping back 40 years to when husband and wife team Stan and Eileen Adams took over Jardines Tenpin Bowling Centre, just 18 months after it first opened.

In 1967, businessman Peter Jardine started the centre as an investment, as tenpin fever was starting to grip the British public having already become extremely popular in America.

Mr Jardine opened the centre in Aylesbury, but within 18 months, had decided that the business was not achieving its full potential and

so enlisted the help of Stan and Eileen Adams who he brought over from another centre.

On June 1, 1969, they took over the centre and while Mr Jardine was still the business's proprietor, the couple turned its fortunes around.

The Adams focused on customer service, which they felt was the most important factor of the business.

This was obviously the magic ingredient as the people of Aylesbury and further away started to come and take part in the many events that Jardines Tenpin Bowling Club was hosting on a daily and evening basis.

After three years Mr Jardine had the business he had originally hoped for.

Soon, a young man named Kevin Pollard joined the team of staff as a young schoolboy to learn the ropes.

After years of hard work and service, Mr Pollard was finally promoted to general manager in 1992 - as well as earning himself a reputation as one of the centre's best bowlers.

In 1972 Mr Jardine expressed a desire to retire but gave the couple first option to buy the business they had made their own. It was important for Mr Jardine that the business was going to remain functioning as a family unit and Stan and Eileen always encouraged local people to work with them, making them the ideal people to take on the thriving business.

Forty years on, Jardines Tenpin Bowling Club, the small family business, is still going strong.

Popular with all ages and supported by an ever growing family of friends and bowling fans, the firm, which still focuses on customer

service, is a good example of how a business must strike the right balance to survive the ups and downs of commercial life.
