Wimpy Bar - the groovy place to be

YOUNG people of the 1970s/80s will remember with fondness eating a bender in a bun at the top of the Wimpy tower in Aylesbury.

The 'fast-food' restaurant where waitresses served deep-fried, curled, frankfurter sausages on a plate complete with knife and fork, was located in the middle of the old Friars Square before it made way for the new indoor shopping centre in the early 90s.

This picture from 1979 was sent in by Penny Sands, now of Brighton, who took it as part of her photography degree.

She said: "The Wimpy Cafe had previously been the Cadena Cafe which I remember not least because as a 14-year-old I had worked there on Saturdays for a brief period. In fact, I am old enough at 53 to remember the original Friars Square being built."
