Photos focus on Winslow's past

A book of pictures that show what 'bow and arrow' market town Winslow was like before it became a commuter town has been published.

Local author Charles Close has compared images from the early 1800's with those taken recently, and has revealed the once remote village's growth over the past 100 years.

His book, Winslow Through Time, is out now.

Gibbard and Ingram

Now a small block of flats, Gibbard and Ingram's Builders and Decorators pictured back in the early 1920's was burnt down by the Great Fire of December 1933. The blaze was started after hot ashes were thrown against a wooden fence by Cantell, the local grocer, that still stands today, destroying neighbouring buildings.

As a result of the fire, employee of Gibbard and Ingram, young Ben Kerrison pictured, went on to become a volunteer Fire Chief.

Redfield

The now popular Intentional Community Redfield, half a mile out of Winslow, Buckinghamshire's large old mansion with 17 acres of gardens, follows a Fully Mutual Housing Co-operative scheme providing a home to twenty tenants that manage the property entirely.

It was originally bought for #17,500 in 1885 housing polo ponies and hunters before being sold to Bucks County Counil for just 15,500 in 1946.

The house has also played home for the Navy during World War Two and later, and later the elderly before becoming an alternative life style commune.

The Polo ponies' stable block are now utilised as accommodation and also an office for local business LILI, the Low-Impact Living Initiative that is a non-profit organisation that helps people to reduce their impact on the environment.

Crash

As the popularity of vehicles grew, so did the hazards. A Winslow farmer in his large tanker full of milk on his return from London went out of control on the village's hump back bridge next to today's current picnic sight.

The brook was said to have run white for some time due to the spilt milk before the area 'received a facelift to make it more attractive'. So much so it is said to now be a popular site for 'dogging'.

Botham

Winslow Sports and Social Club was visitied by England Cricketer' Ian Botham in 1986, along with an all star team that took on Winslow Town's team.

Co-Op

Winslow's Co-Op store in 1954. The family run business by Bob Holmes with his wife and daughter used to also be the local butchers for the village while also behaving as a bakery too.
