From Crown Court fire to United's new ground

This week we again look back at the 1980s with a selection of stories and pictures from May and June 1984.

Charity Fair in Aylesbury, May 10 edition:

The fourth annual charity fair was held in Friars Square. Organised by the Aylesbury Lions Club, the fair lasted some seven hours, and entertainment included a steel band, Punch and Judy show and an acrobatics display.

The multi million-pound portrait of Elizabeth I which was very nearly lost, June 7 edition:

Fire, wind and rain took their toll on the Judge's Lodgings in Aylesbury, but despite damage estimated at thousands of pounds, paintings and furniture were saved.

The fire broke out in the roof of the 19th century building, part of the Crown Court, and raged undetected for some time before the alarm was raised. Works of art all escaped damage due to the prompt action of staff. This included the portrait of Queen Elizabeth I on loan from the Hampden Estate, which recently sold at auction for more than 2.5 million.

Haddenham fancy dress parade, June 21 edition:

A fancy dress parade saw Haddenham Middle School's fun fayre off to a good start. And the rest of the day was also a great success, raising about 1,000 for the PTA funds. The parade contained eight floats and about 100 children wearing costumes.

TV cameras capture forest bash, June 21 edition:

A film crew from Channel 4 was in Chiltern Forest to record the action of the Wendover Bash mountain bike competition for their sport and adventure show Wheels, Wings and Water. About 75 competitors from all over the country took part in the event.

Aylesbury United's new ground secured, June 28 edition:

Aylesbury United were given the green light to build their new ground opposite the Horse and Jockey pub in Buckingham Road. The Ducks had to move from their old site, The Stadium, in Turnfurlong, to make way for housing. Pictured is an aerial shot of The Stadium. The Grange School is top right, and the netball courts belonging to Turnfurlong School are bottom right.
