Aylesbury Civic Centre rolled over in 1989

Aylesbury's Civic Centre rolled over and allowed teenagers to use Maxwell Hall as a skating rink during the summer of 1989.

The idea to provide a designated place for the skaters was agreed by the council after children had taken the notion into their own hands and campaigned for somewhere they would be able to roller skate without being classed as a nuisance.

For three weeks those wishing to roller skate were given the run of the hall on Market Square that otherwise would have caused disruption across the town and bus stations during the school holidays.

Bucks County Council set up an anti-drink driving campaign in the August of 1989 and placed a mobile pub that served only non-alcoholic beverages in Aylesbury's Market Square.

The Driver's Inn visited villages and towns within the county including both Winslow and Buckingham.

The idea of the moveable pub was to deliver the dangers of drink driving to the local customers who would otherwise be in the more stationary pubs.

The aim was achieved while also showing them how to have a good time without needing the added effect of alcohol – also allowing them to legally drive home.

Local football team the Bedgrove Dynamos has been 'priming young talent' for more than 20 years according to this feature found in The Bucks Herald's archives.

The youth team trained by Paul Moore was started the previous year in 1988, despite the FA refusing to recognise talent in under-10 players, including Paul's own son, who was eight at the time.

The club, which continues to train under-10s at Aylesbury's Zoomania Indoor Children's Play Centre today, has since grown and now has teams for all age groups up to the age of 16, before players can join the men's ADt premier division.

What started as just a kick about over the summer for the boys to perfect their skills has gradually grown over the years into a successful football club catering for all ages.

Jimmy Saville fixed it for quite a few lucky people back in the day, including those in Aylesbury needing occupational therapy 20 years ago.

The TV presenter visited Stoke Mandeville's hospital in August 1989 to unveil a plaque that would mark the refurbishment made possible by none other than the man himself.

Donated by the Jimmy Saville Hospital Trust, the 160,000 was spent to create facilities that would help people with everything from woodwork to computer studies and even helped people to learn how to drive.

The teetotal TV star was awarded a teapot in the shape of an egg, an egg cup and a tin of biscuits along with a box of teabags to thank him for his generous contribution, which still helps sufferers trying to live as normal a life as possible today.
