A snap shot of Aylesbury in 1956

A COLLECTION of fascinating photos of Aylesbury taken in 1956 have been submitted to The Bucks Herald.

The photographs, collected by the late Tony Wells in 1956, have now been made available for public viewing.

Mr Wells was born in Albert Street, worked for Antiference and Rivets and had family origins within Aylesbury and Wendover.

He had been taking his slide shows of old Aylesbury and Wendover around the area for over 20 years, prior to his death last year, at the age of 79. He would typically visit locations such as Women's Institutes, British Legions and old people's homes.

His good friend, Ron Adams, who managed the Bacon Shop, on Cambridge Street, recalls: "He was a customer of mine at the Bacon Shop. He used to bring me copies of his postcards which we displayed on the shop wall."

Photograph one depicts Great Western Street. This is the location of the first railway in Aylesbury. You can also see a gargoyle atop the Railway Hotel. Once viewed as a prominent feature by local residents, this fixture is now featured in a local museum.

Photograph two depicts Hale Leys Passage. This is now the back of the central Nat West bank and it's remains run out by the old post office. On the left of this photograph, you can see the Bulls Head Hotel.

Photograph three depicts Nelson Terrace, which was situated off Oxford Road, but is now no longer in existence. You can see what used to be an office block here.

Photograph four depicts Buckingham Street. You may see a large block at the end of the row. This building used to be Chamberlain's and is now Sainsbury's. In the left-hand corner of the photograph, you can see an old three-wheeler car, known as the 'Bond' car.
