2000: Aylesbury company produced world's smallest, lightest mobile phone
This week in The Way We Were, we turn the clock back to the year 2000 to look at what was making the news in Aylesbury Vale and beyond.
It's a small world but an Aylesbury company was making it even tinier by producing the smallest and lightest mobile phone ever.
The SPT88d was designed and developed by Sensei Ltd in the centre of town. They were the first cellular manufacturer to set up in the country.
The phone was 10.3cm long, 4.3cm wide and 1.8cm thick giving it a cubic capacity of just 68cc.
Tributes poured in for Sir John Gielgud who collapsed and died in the garden of his Queen Anne carriage house, South Pavilion in Wotton Underwood.
Sir John was patron of Age Concern Bucks and supported them financially and with art. He was also patron of the Thame Players for 23 years.
Children who lived on Gainsborough Road, Southcourt were told they could no longer play ball games on a play area near their homes.
Some people on the street had told Aylesbury Vale District Council that some balls had been hitting their cars and said ball games should be banned.
Children woke up to find a 'No Ball Games' sign had been erected. Parents had campaigned to keep the right for their children to play ball games and had been assured by AVDC that no action would be taken.
An AVDC spokesman said, that of the 16 households on the street, 10 were in favour of the new sign.
Tring referee Graham Poll had his moment in the spotlight when he took charge of the FA Cup between Aston Villa and Chelsea.
Poll turned in a near faultless display and told The Bucks Herald he was aiming to be consigned to the dustbin of history and was happy to enjoy the football and let the sun shine through.
The only question mark over Poll's performance came with his decision to award the free kick which led to the winning goal. Chelsea won 1-0 thanks to Roberto Di Matteo's strike.
Finally ten volunteers were doing a spot of gardening at Waddesdon Manor.
The group were on a working holiday organised by the National Trust and spent their time replanting the parterre replacing the winter display of tulips and flowers with 11,000 marigolds ready for summer visitors.
