1994: Fire at ski slope, Mix goes live and Ducks legend Cliff nets 250th goal
THIS week we turn the clock back 15 years to 1994 and find that speed cameras were also very much in the news.
Also making the headlines was footballer Cliff Hercules who made his 500th appearance for Aylesbury United.
It was the sight of a mobile speed camera that filled motorists with dread as the first mobile unit was put into operation.
In one period, on Aylesbury road, Monks Risborough, the camera 'flashed' 46 speeding drivers in a mere hour and a half.
Unlike today the camera was hidden away behind an unmarked police car, so motorists were unaware of its presence until its famous double flash. The portable GATSO was introduced along with a 'kill your speed' campaign which saw signs erected in areas prone to speeding.
In an attempt to reduce speed in Weston Turville, residents were campaigning to get traffic calming measures installed in the village. The town's local radio station Mix 96 was given the news it could start broadcasting, and on April 15 the station went live on air with the slogan 'Bucks best music', promising the town a lively, modern and fun station.
The now disused ski slope in Watermead suffered a massive blow when its pavilion went up in flames twice in 10 hours. The fire burnt away almost everything inside, causing around 10,000 damage for Watermead Slopes and Sails who had already gone into receivership.
Former Aylesbury United player and manager Cliff Hercules made his landmark 500th Ducks appearance on March 8, 1994, against Abingdon Town, within a month of scoring his 250th goal.
Cliff Hercules is thought of as the greatest player ever to play in green and white, making 661 appearances and scoring 301 goals.
He now runs his own football coaching courses.
In a year the national team failed to qualify for the football World Cup, it was left to Grendon Rangers FC to restore the country's pride as they won the U16's equivalent of the big prize.
The team from Grendon Underwood, with a population then of just 700, had to raise 9,000 in order to take part and raised money through a series of events including car washing and jumble sales.
In the USA they outplayed major cities including New York and Miami, whose population exceeds 10 million, to win the trophy.
A large part of Cuddington Baptist chapel collapsed only a week before a Thanksgiving service was due to take place.
The service did, however, go ahead at the nearby Methodist Church with a small procession starting off at the damaged site.
