From carnival capers to animal abuse
This week we again look back at 1984 through our files with a selection of summer stories from July and August.
New Miss Aylesbury Crowned - July 12, 1984
Julie Peppler, an 18-year-old insurance clerk from Waddesdon, was named Miss Aylesbury 1984. She beat six other finalists in the competition at the town's Civic Centre. Julie said she would never have entered without encouragment from her proud father. Second place went to Sally Newth, 19, an art student from Aylesbury and Kim Chapman, 20, an administrative assistant from Thame, came third.
Donald Duck Visits Aylesbury Carnival - July 19, 1984
Large crowds braved the rain to enjoy a Disney-themed Aylesbury Carnival, which featured a 49 float procession and more bands, majorettes and attractions than ever before. Hundreds of costumed revellers were joined in the town centre by Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Pluto and Donald Duck, the latter proving a particular hit with local youngsters. Many of the town's firms and schools took part in the festivities and judges felt the standard of entrants was extremely high. Pupils from the Abbey Playgroup, Aylesbury, won first prize for their spectacular 101 Dalmations effort.
Prince Charles Opens Paralympic Games - July 26, 1984
In his role as patron of the British Paraplegic Sports Society, Prince Charles visited Aylesbury to officially declare open the seventh World Wheelchair Games at the Ludwig Guttmann Sports Centre. The Prince laughed and joked with the crowd - which included local dignitaries as well as celebrities - before expressing how 'humbled' he felt by the strength and determination displayed by the athletes taking part.
Morris Minor Rally Rolls Into Quainton - August 16, 1984
Quainton played host to this year's Morris Minor Owner's Club rally. Production stopped on this vintage classic in 1972, although this did little to deter enthusiasts from attending the event from across Buckinghamshire and from as far afield as Wales. Eighty-four different models were represented in total and taking pride of place in the lineup was a pair of 1967 Morris Minor saloons, owned by Angus and Janet Campbell of Abbots Hill, Aylesbury.
Bierton Horticultural Show In Bloom - August 16, 1984
The annual Bierton Horticultural Show was a huge success as always and none enjoyed this year's event more than the Bradshaw family. Local residents Tony and June and their two children swept the board with produce grown on their allotment, winning everything from the coveted Hubbard Cup to the event's Blue Ribbon.
Animal Rights Demonstration - 23rd August, 1984
Aylesbury Animal Rights Group set up a stall in Market Square in order to raise awareness of various aspects of animal cruelty. Young demonstrators took donations and handed out pamphlets and flyers to passers-by on such topics as hare coursing and seal clubbing.
