BUSINESSES in Aylesbury Vale have welcomed the local launch of the Federation of Small Businesses' Keep Trade Local campaign.
Jeera Indian Restaurant hosted the launch in Stone earlier this month, which was attended by members of the villages' Business Network group.
There are similar events planned for Wendover, Princes Risborough, Haddenham and Aylesbury in the near future.
The FSB is urging government at all levels to support its campaign- and take action on parking charges, business rates, post office closures, and crime against businesses, and they also call for public contracts to be awarded to more local firms.
Linda Walton, chair of the FSB's South Bucks & Aylesbury branch, which has 1100 members, said: "Small businesses and independent retailers are at the heart of our economy and local communities, creating growth and jobs. They must be sufficiently supported."
She outlined the reasons why small local businesses are worth protecting. "Firstly, they give variety, and make the High Steet an interesting place to come.
Secondly, all big businesses start out as small businesses and so if we don't nurture them there will be no future for British business.
"Thirdly, we are all encouraged to drive less and to work locally so if you have a thriving High Street on your doorstep you can help the environment as well as the local economy."
The FSB is calling upon the business community to sign an online petititon calling upon the Prime Minister to secure the future of small shops, available at
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/keeptradelocal For reaction to the campaign, pick up your free copy of The Business Herald inside The Bucks Herald or Commuter Herald this week.
