Council chiefs have announced who has won a bumper £3.5million contract to build its new flagship council chamber, which you can take a tour of here on BHTV.
Aylesbury Vale District Council has confirmed that construction company Morgan Ashurst will build the multi-million pound chamber and conference centre.

The project should be finished by March next year – just nine months from now and two years on from when funds were first set aside in the capital budget for the project.

The blueprints show a curved building, which will showcase a 'floating feature roof' with an oculus – a huge glass lens – placed on top, to reflect natural light back into the building.

Take a virtual tour of the chamber by clicking 'Play' now.

Despite questions over the wisdom of spending such a large sum on a new building given the economic climate, Councillor Michael Edmonds, deputy leader and cabinet member for economic development, said it would have its own financial benefits.

"Our new conference centre and council chamber will be a fantastic building with a real civic presence. It will be an excellent place for our debates and will also be more able to accommodate local people who want to attend our meetings.

"Our aim is to create a building that local people and councillors can be proud of. The suite will also be available for other organisations to use, so we should be able to generate some income while reducing our own costs of hiring."

That's nice for the council. Voted through by their caring sharing Conservative majority.

The ordinary people of Aylesbury would have preferred they spent the money on a judicial challenge to the housing plans, as St Albans & Hertfordshier have done.

Still, I'm alright Jack, eh Cllr Edmonds?

Is Morgan Ashurst a local company? Will this generate any local jobs over the next 9 months, or will they draft in construction workers from out of town?

up to 68% of the votes feel that the new build for the council chamber is a waste of money. now that is quiet high . will the electrate see or listen to the votes cast and understand that thier impartiality is valid. I send a resounding NO as the likely response. will you the elected listen .I again say NO. well whats the point in asking what we think any way. Marty.

£3.5milion pounds spent on theirselves? What do they need a new chamber for? Renovate the existing if really necessary and would be cost effective I believe.

££.5miliin would have been better spent on the roads in the Aylesbury area to serve the public. They now must be some of the worst in the country.

This council certainly knows how to waste money.
